With a stellar cast, this story of a heist gone awry is truly an 80s classic. Starring John Cleese, Jamie Lee Curtis, Kevin Kline and Michael Palin, this tells the story of four bank robbers who double and triple cross each other once the job is done.
John Cleese plays Archie Leach, whose quietly frustrated English life is interrupted when he meets Wanda – suddenly a law student and his biggest fan. Cleese seems comfortably unaware that lawyers should even have fans, and laps up the undeserved attention with barely a second thought. Things get complicated once he realises Wanda’s connection to the case he is working on, but Archie is unable to completely resist Wanda’s charms.
Kevin Kline won an Oscar for his role as Otto, an ex-CIA agent. His brash American style of ‘getting things done’ is a huge contrast to anyone else in the story, but especially Michael Palin’s stuttering, animal-loving Ken Pile. The scenes between the two are marvellous, with Otto’s hyperactive and deranged nature being the perfect trigger for Ken, who is already on the edge because of the ‘clean up’ he is required to do.
Although less exuberant than Otto, Jamie Lee Curtis’s Wanda is excellent – her only constant loyalty throughout the film is to the diamonds. Her lies to each mark are so convincing that they have you wondering exactly what her intentions are, almost until the credits roll.
Conclusion: Nothing fishy about this story!
Overall Rating: Not everyone’s cup of tea, but definitely worth a watch!
